Heat Exchangers

Shell and tube heat exchanger fabrication.

A shell and tube heat exchanger transfers heat between two fluids. One fluid flows through a bundle of tubes, and the other flows around them inside a shell. They are used as condensers and evaporators in chillers, and as coolers and heaters in oil and gas, power and process plants.

We fabricate new units to match your process conditions, space and budget, and we can reverse-engineer a unit from old drawings or from the existing exchanger itself.

Overhaul or Replace?

Should you overhaul or replace your compressor?

This is often the biggest decision for plant managers. Here is a simple comparison.

FactorOverhaulReplace
CostUsually a fraction of a new unitFull equipment cost plus installation
Lead timeDays to a few weeksImported units can take weeks or months
System changesNone. It fits exactly as beforeMay need piping, electrical and control changes
DowntimeShort, and planned around your operationLonger, especially with new foundations
Best whenCasing and major parts are in good conditionCasing is cracked, or the model is obsolete with no parts

After inspection, we give you an honest recommendation. If replacement makes more sense, we will tell you.

Plant Manager Guide

What plant and facility managers should know.

water

Hard water and scale

Riyadh water contains a lot of calcium and minerals. In water-cooled condensers, this builds scale inside the tubes, raises condensing pressure and wastes power. Good water treatment and scheduled tube cleaning prevent most of it.

thermostat

Signs to track on your plant

Operators should log suction and discharge pressures, oil pressure, approach temperature, amps and vibration. A slow trend in these numbers warns you weeks before a breakdown.

oil_barrel

Oil analysis

A small oil sample sent to a lab shows metal wear, moisture and acid. It is one of the cheapest ways to catch bearing and rotor damage inside a screw compressor early.

schedule

Planning around summer

Compressor overhauls and re-tubing are best done in winter or spring, before the cooling season. A failure in July means lost production, unhappy tenants and rush pricing for parts.

Stories From the Field

Common plant problems and how we solve them.

What plant and facility teams were facing, and how our team handled it.

Real project photo: screw compressor overhaul
Screw compressorHospitalOverhaul

A chiller compressor shaking the plant room

location_onHospital chiller plant, Riyadh

What they were facing

One of three screw compressors was running with heavy vibration and had lost a big part of its capacity. The other two were carrying the whole building in peak summer, and the engineering team was worried a second unit would fail.

How the day went

  • Day 1Vibration and oil readings taken on site, compressor isolated.
  • Day 2Compressor lifted out and brought to our workshop.
  • Day 3 to 7Teardown, rotor inspection, new bearings and seals, slide valve repair.
  • Day 8Load tested, returned and reinstalled overnight.

How our team handled it

We planned the removal at night so the hospital never lost cooling in critical areas, and shared photos of worn bearings so the engineers could see exactly what failed.

task_alt

Capacity was restored, vibration dropped back to normal levels, and the hospital avoided a long wait for a new imported compressor.

Real project photo: condenser re-tubing
Re-tubingCondenserTesting

A condenser that kept leaking into the water loop

location_onCommercial tower, Riyadh

What they were facing

A water-cooled chiller kept losing refrigerant, and the condensing pressure crept higher every week. Tube leaks had been plugged twice before, and the problem kept coming back.

How the day went

  • Visit 1Pressure test and eddy current check showed many thinned tubes.
  • Week 1Old tube bundle removed and tubes cut out.
  • Week 2New copper tubes fitted and expanded, tubesheet cleaned.
  • HandoverHydrostatic test passed and report issued.

How our team handled it

Instead of plugging more tubes and losing capacity, we recommended a full re-tube and a water treatment review, since scale was the root cause.

task_alt

The leaks stopped, condensing pressure dropped back to normal, and the client added quarterly tube inspections to its maintenance plan.

FabricationFactoryReverse engineering

A process cooler with no drawings

location_onFactory in the Second Industrial City

What they were facing

An old shell and tube oil cooler was badly corroded and leaking. The original manufacturer no longer existed, and there were no drawings to order a replacement.

How the day went

  • Day 1Site visit, full measurements, photos of nozzles and supports.
  • Week 1Reverse-engineered design shared for approval.
  • Weeks 2 to 4Fabrication in our workshop with upgraded tube material.
  • DeliveryPressure tested and delivered with test certificate.

How our team handled it

We matched every nozzle position and support so the new unit bolted straight into the existing pipework, and upgraded the tubes to handle the factory's water quality better.

task_alt

The new cooler dropped straight into place with no pipe changes, and the leaks are gone.

These stories are based on the kinds of calls our team handles across Riyadh. Timelines vary with site access and parts availability.

FAQs

Questions about heat exchangers and compressor overhauling.

How often should a screw compressor be overhauled?add
It depends on the brand, operating conditions and maintenance history. Many manufacturers recommend a major inspection or overhaul at set running-hour intervals, so check your compressor manual. Warning signs such as vibration, oil carryover or capacity loss mean it is time for an inspection whatever the running hours.
How long does a compressor overhaul take?add
Most overhauls take several working days, depending on the compressor size, the damage found and parts availability. You get the exact turnaround time in your quotation, and urgent jobs for critical equipment can be prioritized.
Is overhauling cheaper than buying a new compressor?add
In most cases, yes. When the casing and major components are in good condition, an overhaul costs much less than a new unit and avoids long import lead times. If replacement makes more sense, we will tell you honestly.
Do you provide a warranty after overhaul?add
Yes. Our overhauls and fabrication work come with a written warranty covering workmanship and replaced parts. The warranty period is stated on your quotation.
Can you fabricate a heat exchanger without drawings?add
Yes. We take measurements from your existing unit, check the tube count, tube size, pass arrangement and nozzle positions, and reverse-engineer a replacement that fits your system.
Can you re-tube a heat exchanger on site?add
Yes, for many units, depending on access, size and the type of tubesheet joint. We confirm this during the inspection.
What tests do you perform, and will I get a report?add
We carry out hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing, leak testing and run testing, plus vibration, oil or insulation testing where needed. You receive a written report with every job.
Do you offer pickup and delivery?add
Yes. We can arrange removal, transport to our workshop and reinstallation of your equipment in Riyadh. Projects outside Riyadh are available on request.
Why is my chiller using more power than before?add
The most common cause is fouling and scale inside the condenser or evaporator tubes. Riyadh water is hard, and even a thin layer of calcium scale raises the approach temperature and the kW per ton (kW/TR). Tube cleaning or chemical descaling, plus proper water treatment, usually brings consumption back down.
What is approach temperature, and why does it matter?add
Approach temperature is the difference between the refrigerant temperature and the leaving water temperature in a condenser or evaporator. When it rises over time, heat transfer is getting worse, usually because of scale, fouling or low refrigerant. It is one of the best early signs that a heat exchanger needs cleaning.
Should I keep adding refrigerant if my compressor keeps losing gas?add
No. Topping up without fixing the leak wastes money, harms the environment and can damage the compressor. The leak should be found, repaired and pressure tested before recharging.
What does eddy current testing show?add
Eddy current testing checks each heat exchanger tube for wall thinning, pitting and cracks without cutting it open. It tells you which tubes to plug or replace before they leak, and helps you plan re-tubing.
Which compressor brands do you overhaul?add
We work on common refrigeration and air compressor brands, including Bitzer, Hanbell, RefComp, Carrier, York, Trane, Daikin, Grasso, Copeland, Dorin, Sabroe, Bock and Frascold.
