What Is MEP?

What MEP means and why it matters.

MEP stands for mechanical, electrical and plumbing. These are the systems that make a building usable: air conditioning and ventilation, power and lighting, water and drainage. In Saudi Arabia, MEP works usually include firefighting, fire alarm and low current systems as well.

Electromechanical works is another name for the same field. Good MEP design and installation keep a building safe, comfortable and efficient, and they decide how much you will spend on electricity and repairs for years.

Civil Defense and Salamah

Fire protection systems in commercial, industrial and many residential buildings must be approved by the General Directorate of Civil Defense through the Salamah platform. The license is renewed periodically, and a maintenance contract for fire systems is normally part of renewal.

Saudi Building Code

MEP design and installation should follow the Saudi Building Code (SBC). Fire protection follows SBC 801, which refers to NFPA standards for sprinklers, fire pumps and alarms. Equipment should conform to SASO requirements.

What does an MEP contractor do?add

An MEP contractor designs, installs and maintains the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems of a building. That includes air conditioning and ventilation, power and lighting, water supply and drainage, and usually firefighting and low current systems too.

How much do MEP works cost for a villa or building in Riyadh?add

The cost depends on the building size, the systems included, material brands and the finishing level. We prepare a bill of quantities (BOQ) from your drawings or a site survey, then give you a written, itemized quotation.

Do you handle Civil Defense approval for fire systems?add

We install firefighting and fire alarm systems to Saudi Civil Defense and Saudi Building Code requirements and prepare the documents needed for inspection. The approval process is coordinated with you and your consultant.

Can you work on an existing building without shutting it down?add

Yes. We plan shutdowns in small sections, work after hours when needed and use temporary supplies, so tenants and operations are disturbed as little as possible.

Do you provide as-built drawings and a warranty?add

Yes. We work directly for building owners and also as an MEP subcontractor for main contractors and developers.

How quickly do you respond to emergency breakdowns?add

We work 7 days a week. Contract clients get priority emergency response, and the response time is written into the maintenance contract.

What is the Salamah platform?add

Salamah is the Saudi Civil Defense digital platform for fire and life safety. Fire protection design approvals, inspections, contractor licensing and maintenance certification for buildings go through it.

Do I need a maintenance contract to renew my Civil Defense license?add

For buildings with fire protection systems, Civil Defense expects the systems to be maintained, and a valid maintenance contract with an approved company is normally part of the license renewal. Check the current requirements for your building type on Salamah before renewal.

Which codes apply to MEP works in Saudi Arabia?add

MEP works follow the Saudi Building Code (SBC), including the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire codes. Fire protection is based on SBC 801, which refers to NFPA standards. Electrical connections must also meet Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) requirements.
